RWE is one of the world’s leading companies in offshore wind. The company currently operates 19 offshore wind farms in five countries with a total installed capacity of 6.2 gigawatts (GW) – RWE’s share in these projects amounts to 3.3 GW. Furthermore, RWE currently has four offshore wind projects under construction in four countries: Sofia off the coast of northern England, Thor in Denmark, OranjeWind off the Dutch coast and Nordseecluster north of the island of Juist, Germany. The projects will be completed in the years 2026 to 2028 and will have a combined generation capacity of 4.8 GW, with RWE’s share amounting to 3.1 GW.
Most recently, the biggest winner of the UK’s latest CfD (Contracts for Difference Allocation) round has been RWE, which secured contracts for almost 7 GW of offshore wind projects. The operator has been awarded CfDs at a strike price of GBP 91.20/MWh (around EUR 105.25/MWh) for its Norfolk Vanguard East and Norfolk Vanguard West, two Dogger Bank South and the Awel y Môr offshore wind projects, with a combined capacity of 6.9 GW.
The UK government said on 14 January that the AR7 round is the biggest single procurement of offshore wind energy in British and European history.
“It is a monumental step towards clean power by 2030 and the price secured in this auction is 40% lower than the alternative cost of building and operating a new gas plant.” –
UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband
RWE powering digital transformation and energy transition
In terms of partnerships with technology providers, RWE and Amazon have signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) covering 110 MW of electricity from RWE’s Nordseecluster B offshore wind project in the German North Sea.
The agreement builds on a strategic framework agreement signed by the two companies in June 2025, under which RWE supports Amazon’s carbon-free energy goals, while Amazon Web Services provides cloud services, artificial intelligence and data analytics to support RWE’s digital transformation.
Together, the partnership reflects a broader commitment to digital transformation in offshore wind, aligning large-scale renewable generation with advanced cloud and AI capabilities.
The contracted capacity is expected to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 139,000 German households annually.
“Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) like this one with Amazon are crucial for accelerating Germany’s decarbonisation while strengthening long-term security of supply. By enabling large-scale offshore projects such as the Nordseecluster, we can bring more reliable, carbon-free electricity onto the grid and support a resilient energy system,”
Ulf Kerstin, Chief Commercial Officer at RWE Supply & Trading.
“Germany is transitioning to an energy future that is modern and carbon-free, and this agreement with RWE helps advance that vision. As Amazon works toward net-zero carbon by 2040, we continue enabling projects that strengthen Germany’s renewable energy capacity for generations to come,” – Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager of Amazon in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
In terms of digital transformation in offshore wind and across its wider operations, Infosys has collaborated with RWE as a trusted partner for over 12 years, supporting numerous modernisation and business transformation initiatives. Leveraging this extensive experience and its expertise in complex digital workplace transformations, Infosys is working closely with RWE to modernise its workplace with a strong focus on user centricity and sustainability. The partnership with Infosys is helping to steer RWE towards a modern workplace, placing user centricity and sustainability at the heart of its approach. This transformation will use tools like migration factory for automated Office 365 migration, collaboration apps, business dashboards and reports, an Azure-powered conversational bot, service request automation, and governance solutions. These tools will support RWE in streamlining business operations and enhancing the employee experience.
Scaling Digital Transformation in Offshore Wind at the Digital Energy Strategies Summit
As offshore wind scales at record pace and digital transformation becomes inseparable from energy infrastructure, organisations like RWE are demonstrating how capital investment, strategic partnerships and technology adoption must move in parallel. These are precisely the kinds of real-world delivery challenges and collaboration models that will be explored in depth at the Summit, where senior energy leaders will examine how to accelerate electrification, embed AI and cloud into core operations, and scale transformation beyond pilot projects.
